Just Chillin' With My Peeps....

I always stay up and watch the ball drop in New York City on New Year's. Sometimes the local stations here decide to not show it and use the time to show car chases and other useless trash I couldn't give two hoots about when the countdown is going on. But alas, this year I was able to see it, twice! (New York time and our time) But while watching, one of my friend's informed me that last year, she saw a drag queen being lowered in a red shoe, and I thought, "That's hilarious! I wonder if other places drop things??" Sooooo.... I am thrilled to share with you what I found. Enjoy..... In Havre de Grace, Maryland, a wooden duck is lowered. Atlanta, Georgia lowers an eight foot tall by eight foot wide, over 800 pound peach. North Carolina has a few different ones. In Brasstown, they lower a live opossum in a cage, Mount Olive, a pickle, and Raleigh, a 900 pound brass acorn. And Texas?? They hope to lower Darren Ballard's testicles in 2009. !?!? Indeed! Pennsylvania has the most.(28!!!!) In Blain, it's a cow made of wood, dropped from a silo. Falmouth has a stuffed goat lowered. Hershey raises a giant Hershey Kiss , and Mechanicsburg lowers a wrench (get it? Mechanics burg- a wrench- cute huh?) just to name a few. One of my personal favorites is the giant Peep that gets lowered in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. But I think these two take the cake. First, the pirate beer wench(pictured)(Tina, how much could Bob tease you about that one!), and second, the drag queen named Sushi(also pictured) that comes from the ceiling in a nine foot red shoe, both brought to us from Key West, Florida. And I thought that shiny glass ball in New York was interesting! These people have gotten down right creative! But even though they are all extremely strange, they supposedly all have something to do with the city's history. Which leads me to wonder, "Who in the world established Key West??"

LOL! Now THIS is what a blog is for...useless and fascinating information that we all will remember for the rest of our lives.
(I did a 'google' on bowling alley culture the other day and came up w/ some crazy funny stuff as well. Bowling alleys are a world unto themselves it seems!)
But hey, back to the New Years 'droppings'....I wonder if the peep is edible? Yummy!
That is hilarious! Who knew. I bet you would have liked to have been there for the giant peeps. Did I tell you that when I was cleaning out my truck when I sold it, I found a box that you left in there behind the seat? I should have saved them for you, I'm sure they keep forever.
O_O ... ::uncontrolled laughter::
That's hilarious! I agree with Ashley, this is one of the best blog entries on the net, bar none. LOL!
Okay, gotta run to post office to mail Dad's dress shoes that he left here... Difficult weekend, that.
Holy crap! You are sooo funny. Who knew what an incredibly humorous writer you are? CRACK ME UP. And any time you get to use opossum, and it must be said O - Possum Now THAT is a good blog entry.
ANd HOORAY for Beer wenches! When that one retires looks like I've found my next gig.
SWEET!
Heddo, peeps get better with age! They get mighty chewy...kind of like a gummy worm. As we know, THOSE are just strings of jello that have been sitting on the counter for a few years anyway!
Absolutely brilliant! I love useless trivia!
Too bad M-town doesn't seem to drop anything interesting (and trust me, I'm not volunteering my testicles!)
You had to bring up Key West, Florida so check it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_West%2C_Florida
Some quick facts that might explain the pirates and drag queens if you don't want to read the entire history:
"It is a popular gay tourist destination"
"In 1823 Commodore David Porter of the United States Navy West Indies Anti-Pirate Squadron took charge of Key West, which he ruled (but, according to some, exceeding his authority) as military dictator under martial law."
Beer wenches are awesome! If you're ever in Phoenix, AZ you gotta check out the Tilted Kilt!
So sorry I didnt make it to the housewarming Sat. It was later than I thought it would be and I had made plans w/ my dad to to over there at five. That sucks. Hope to see you soon! Did ya get lots of nice stuff?
Sweet! Thanks guys! Glad ya'll liked it. :) I also was just fascinated by it all. I wish that someone would cover all or even just a few of the different things that cities drop. That would be a great countdown! And heck yeah I would have liked to have been there for the giant peep! And if it had have been edible....ooooooh..... I don't remember you telling me I left those Peeps in your truck. That's hilarious. Whoops! And yeah, they probably would have tasted just a smidge different. They DO keep forever! And thanks for the info Aaron! That explains so much!
S'ok Ashley. I do hate you didn't get to come. It was a hoot. And yeah, we got a ton of awesome stuff. It was great! You'll have to come see our place next time you're in town. :)
oh yeah..........Aaron, I nearly peed my pants when I read about you not volunteering your testicles for the ball drop. h.i.l.a.r.i.o.u.s.
Hey if it made you laugh, then mission accomplished! Obviously, there's not much shame left in our family!
